An Excellent Vampire Film

I saw Jonathan in the early '70s, at the old Harvard Square Theater, in Cambridge, MA, and I have been looking for it to reappear on the screens ever since (or maybe on DVD). Contrary to the "classical" vampire film, Jonathan's plot is rather an original one, in so far that it carries a political message. A bunch of aristocratic, fascist vampires, led by the evil Count, have taken over the country. They have turned their peasant population into slaves and literally suck the blood out of them. In their midst, a hero appears, ready to destroy this scourge. I think it would be most "a propos," given the neo-aristocratic present administration of Bush "le petit," for this film to be reissued.

I do not remember all the details of the film, the cinematography, acting, etc, but I do remember being enthralled by it and kept riveted in my chair. Given these vague memories, it is difficult for me to give this film a precise rating, but I can safely give it a seven or eight stars. So let's go with eight.

Tina Balser is a bored New York housewife-mother married to Jonathan, a pompous, social-climbing lawyer who ridicules her in front of their children, criticizing everything she does or wears. She begins an affair with George Prager, a dashing, successful and blatantly sadistic writer. Finally after George has tormented Tina in much the same manner Jonathan has, and has been unfaithful to boot, she goes back to her husband and begins group therapy.

I've known a man who is just like Jonathan.

With the feminist movement on the rise, they obviously had to make a movie about a woman in an abusive relationship, and "Diary of a Mad Housewife" does a good job with it. Tina Balser's (Carrie Snodgress, RIP) husband Jonathan (Richard Benjamin) is the biggest jerk in the world. Any bad qualities that a person could have, you can bet money that Jonathan has them. So, Tina starts having an affair with George Prager (Frank Langella), only to find out his secret.

As it is, I've actually known a man who is almost exactly like Jonathan. To avoid any lawsuits, I won't say his name, but he is one creepy person. This movie could almost be based on him (but obviously it's not). A really good movie, even if it is a little dated.

Review :

A fine vehicle for some very sexy ladies.

"The Forbidden Photos of a Lady Above Suspicion" is a good entry into the Giallo genre, with a plot (concocted by Ernesto Gastaldi and Mahnahen Velasco) that's actually pretty easy to follow. It does have some twists along the way, but never gets overly convoluted. Director Luciano Ercoli takes full advantage of the Techniscope aspect ratio (2.35:1) to fill the screen with colour and detail. Some devotees of the Giallo may not find it to be completely satisfying as it really isn't all that sleazy, and it certainly isn't ever gory. Mostly, Ercoli uses the film as a means of showcasing the charms of his dynamic and luscious actresses, Dagmar Lassander and Nieves Navarro (Ms. Navarro would become Ms. Ercoli two years later).

Lassander plays Minou, the bored wife of businessman Peter (Pier Paolo Capponi), who is accosted by a stranger (Simon Andreu) on a beach one night. It seems as if he intends to rape her (and indeed, this depraved man does have sex on the brain), but what he does is he warns Minou that her husband is a killer and is not to be trusted. Minou ends up caught in his blackmailing scheme, and when she tries later to convince people of what has been happening to her, there's no evidence to back up her claims.

Lassander is a pleasure to look at, and delivers a sympathetic performance as well; Navarro is a saucy delight as her friend Dominique. Capponi is engaging as Peter, and Andreu does look like he is having a good time playing the creepy blackmailer. Osvaldo Genazzani as the police inspector and Salvador Huguet as Peters' associate George round out the principal cast. These performers and filmmakers do a creditable job of holding your attention and interested in how things will develop, although some viewers might predict where it's going on prior to its resolution.

With outfits and music that strongly evoke this era (Ennio Morricone composes a nicely mellow score), this is worthy of viewing for lovers of the more exploitative side of Italian cinema.

Seven out of 10.

An underrated and lovely film...

A very beatiful low key film about a woman and a man meeting and getting to know one another little by little. Underneath, things are not what they appear to be...

In "Walking Stick" Samantha Eggar and David Hemmings give very fine and clear performances as unseeming Londoners. The actors were very hot and coveted starlets at the end of the sixties, starring in loads of ambitious films and then later never to be heard from again... Shame really, they´re brilliant.

Harmless fun

Den Ståndaktiga Kyrkoherden is a harmless sex-comedy (unless you consider some full frontal nudity in women harmful) that is told in the way of a naughty, tongue-in-cheek folk ballad with a troubadour (minstrel) commenting in rhyme on the events as they unfold.

The prologue shows the burning of a witch (pretty explicit considering this is a comedy) who curses the descendants of her judge and prosecutor while at the stake.

The main story is set in the early 1800s. Sweden is at war with Russia and most men are under arms, leaving their buxom warm blooded women at home yearning for some male company. The descendant of the witch-burning reverend arrives in a small village as the new priest. All women are exited by his arrival, except one, the daughter of the witch from the prologue. She seeks vengeance for her mother and puts a spell on the priest that causes priapism (a continuous erection). In response to this the women of the village see themselves called upon to try and cure the affliction in the best way they know… This is a product of the sixties. At the time it was a huge success in Sweden. Nowadays, the humour seems a bit dated, but teenagers may still giggle at it.

Seeing Cornelis Vreeswijk as the troubadour is a nice extra.

Unofficial Remake of Cuando Tu No Estas

Sin Un Adios which is the 6th film starring Spanish singer Raphael and the third Raphael film directed by Vicente Escriva, turns out to be an unofficial remake of Rahael's first and best film, CUANDO TU NO ESTAS directed by Mario Camus. Raphael, once again, plays a popular singer who must go on a 3 day publicity trip with one of his teenage fans, played by the very young Leslie Anne Down who was 17 at the time this film was made. They fall in love but Raphael's manager's intervene and then something tragic happens, just like it did in Raphael's first film, CUANDO TU NO ESTAS. The film is a slight improvement over Raphael's previous film, EL ANGEL, but once again there is no songs by Rapheal's best composer, Manuel Alejando in this film and this film has Raphael singing THIS IS MY LIFE( a Shirley Bassey standard) in English very badly. The only good song in this film is BALADA DE LA TROMPETA which Raphael does in clown face!

Does not hold up.

I saw this film when it was released and was totally mesmerized by the story and the performances. When I found it on video, (twenty years later) I immediately rented it and had a number of friends over to watch it. I couldn't believe how pompous and overdone the film was. My film recomendations to my friends have suffered ever since.
